Bearing is the idea behind the concept of using a compass. It is like a formula to a mathematics problem. Like it is essential to know a formula to solve a problem in Mathematics, it is similarly necessary to know to use bearings while using a compass.
What is a Bearing?
Bearing is the measurement of distance in directions between two points. It divides the compass into four quadrants measuring 90 degrees each. Moving clockwise, the compass measures North, North East, South and South West quadrants. If you have to travel from one place to another, you need to have the knowledge of picking the right bearing for the distance you want to travel. It therefore, is the reference to the distance you need to travel on a compass using the map. Bearings are of two types- Grid Bearings and Magnetic Bearings.
Grid Bearing is in use when we are using a map while the Magnetic bearing is the one which is used when we are working on the ground directly.
How to Use Bearings on Compass?
While using a compass, one needs to find the two points on the map which define the travel points to and from. While holding a compass when the arrow of direction points to the way you want to travel, you need to move towards it. One must ensure that the needles of the compass are rightly pointing towards the direction of travel and there is no ambiguity in the reading of the same. Also, the bearing is now available above the compass.
A bearing has to be read properly and for that, the compass has to be held steadily. To test a bearing reading, one could test doing a simple formula. Just take your compass to an empty this space and mark a spot. Now at the spot, set your compass to a bearing between 0 and 100 degrees, now pick a landmark to your direction of travel and take good 15 steps towards it and stop. Now add 100 degrees to your initial bearing and move towards your direction further. Again stop after 15 steps and then add another 100 degrees. Now pick another landmark and walk towards your direction again taking 15 more steps.
Now look up to see if you have reached your original starting point! If you have, you have already learned to use bearings on the compass correctly.
